Sage is an evergreen perennial native to the Meditteranean and North Africa. Its genus, "Salvia", is from Latin salvere - "to be well" or "to heal".
Sage has a benevolent reputation, especially with North American Indians who use it in smudging ceremonies to drive out bad spirits, feelings or influences and to keep bad spirits from entering the area where a ceremony takes place.
