EUCALYPTUS

Also known as 'Blue Mallee' or 'Blue Gum' in Australia, and 'Fever Tree' in Europe, the eucalyptus tree is a native Australian species from the Myrtacea plant family.

A powerful antibacterial substance, known as eucalyptol, is found in the essential oil extracted from Eucalyptus leaves and twigs.

In aromatherapy, eucalyptus essential oil has a pleasing scent and is an excellent respiratory antiseptic and decongestant; producing an aroma that brings welcome relief to the symptoms of head colds and sinus problems.

Eucalyptus essential oil can be massaged* into the chest, back and throat to provide temporary relief of bronchial coughs, sinusitis and congestion headaches, and a couple of drops sprinkled onto the pillow can help ease breathing during sleep.

Australian aboriginals used a eucalyptus poultices for healing of any kind of wound or inflammation, and modern herbalists continue to recommend it as a potent topical antiseptic.

In herbal medicine, eucalyptus is generally recognized as: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, decongestant, anti-malarial, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic, antiseptic and expectorant.
