Phototoxic Effects of Mandarin Essential Oil
Our organic mandarin essential oil has been unadultered, meaning it is in its completely natural state. As such, it does contain chemical constituents which are known to be phototoxic, particularly if skin is exposed to UV radiation immediately after applying the product. ('Phototoxic' means the product can increase the chance of a sunburn when applied topically). Therefore, if citrus essential oil is to be used in a leave-on topical product (eg. body lotion, massage oil), the maximum concentration recommended by the International Fragrance Association (IFA) (bergamot, orange, mandarin, lemon, grapefruit) is up to 0.5%, depending upon concentration of terpenes. This is particularly important if skin is going to be exposed to UV radiation soon after application of a leave-on product containing citrus essential oils. To put it another way, if you have 30 grams of skin lotion or carrier oil, up to a maximum of 1.5 grams of citrus essential oil is considered safe by the IFA*.
