Essential Oil Dilution and Usage Guidelines

The dilution levels for essential oils vary depending upon their intended use. The most common dilutions are listed below:

  • Vaporization

5-6 drops of essential oil in a burner, vaporizer or diffuser. Essential oil should always be floated in water in order to prevent it from burning.

  • Facial Sauna

2-3 drops of essential oil in a basin of steaming hot water. Place towel over head and basin to prevent steam from escaping. Relax and breathe in the aroma, allowing the steam to vaporize the aromatherapy oil, providing your skin and senses with the aromatic benefits.

  • Direct Inhalation

1-2 drops of essential oil in a clean handkerchief.

  • Therapeutic Bath

Mix 5-10 drops of essential oil with 1 teaspoon of Alchemilla Aromatherapy Solubilizer, then add to a full, warm tub. Use warm, not hot, water.

  • Compress

Mix 5 drops of essential oil with 1 teaspoon of Alchemilla Aromatherapy Solubilizer, add to a bowl containing 2 cups hot or cool water.

  • Massage Oil/Lotion

20 drops of aromatherapy oil per 4 fluid ounces carrier oil or body lotion.

  • Room or Body Spritzer

Mix 15 drops of essential oil with 1 teaspoon of Aromatherapy Solubilizer, then add to a spritzer bottle filled with 2 fl.oz of pure distilled water. Shake well and use over skin, body and environment as often as desired.

  • Adding to Shampoo

20 drops of aromatherapy oil per 4 fluid ounces of shampoo base.

Remember that authentic, undiluted aromatherapy oils are very concentrated - one drop goes a long way. Authentic aromatherapy oils are volatile and can easily penetrate skin. Some can cause skin irritation or sensitivity, especially if they have not been diluted correctly before application, or if they are used in higher than recommended concentrations. If you are going to use essential oils on your skin, ensure the oil is suitable for topical application and remember to patch test for sensitivity. For a chemical-free, authentic aromatherapy treatment, always use 100% pure, undiluted, unadultered, and preferably organic, aromatherapy oils or blends from a source that you trust.
