A favorite among many herbalists, Calendula was once the herb of choice for curing the plague in the 17th century, and as a depression remedy patients were told to simply gaze at its cheerful blossoms.

Calendula has been used as a dye for fabrics and cosmetics and is sometimes known as 'poor man's saffron' due to its use as an alternative to saffron for coloring rice.

Calendula contains helianol, a component of triterpene alcohols present in its flowers that has a potent anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. In addition, antioxidants, such as carotenoids, give Calendula flowers their yellow and orange colorations.

Calendula extract is obtained from the plant's bright orange and yellow flowers. Due to the presence of saponins, resins and essential oil in the flowers, Calendula extract is mildly antiseptic, healing and particularly soothing on chapped, inflamed, dry or damaged skin.
